Who is the trustee of my Retirement Plan? Most providers name an officer and/or stockholder of the Plan Sponsor as trustee. To determine who is trustee in your plan, review either the plan document or the Summary Plan Description. If a 3rd party trustee with fiduciary responsibilities is provided, the costs usually run several thousands of dollars per year. The costs are there due to the additional fiduciary responsibility. If trained professionals work to avoid the additional risk associated with acting as trustee, most plan sponsors should not even consider the responsibility. See enclosed brochure “Trustee=Responsibility.”
